BERD@NFDI is organizing the 1st Colloquium on empirical research using unstructured data that addresses the special needs of doctoral students and postdocs. 

BERD@NFDI is a research data infrastructure dedicated to transforming how Business, Economics, and Related Data are managed. With a special focus on the use of unstructured data in these disciplines, such as images, videos, audio, and text, the goal of BERD@NFDI is to provide a comprehensive suite of services and tools. These will facilitate the searching, collecting, indexing, processing, analyzing, and preserving both data and algorithms, simplifying your data management needs throughout the entire research process. While building such a platform, it is crucial to continuously monitor the state of play in the respective fields, to foster critical discussion and community engagement, and to guide researchers toward employing state-of-the-art methodologies.

Pursuing these goals, the colloquium will be held at Mannheim Business School, Germany, on June 10-11, 2024.

The colloquium provides a unique opportunity for doctoral students, postdocs, and other empirical researchers across business disciplines and beyond to discuss their (dissertation) research with other research fellows and leading academics. We explicitly invite researchers from all disciplines of business, economics, and social sciences (e.g., marketing, information systems, operations research, finance, accounting, management, economics, economic and business history, politics, sociology, psychology) to apply for the conference. The research submitted to this event must involve the analysis of unstructured data.

Submissions should be in the form of a presentation of no more than 8 PowerPoint slides (plus cover slide, text on all slides in Times Roman, and at least 12 font size) that address the following points:

– the description of the research question(s),
– the description of data,
– the analyses conducted or planned,
– the attempted contributions of the research.

Please send your PowerPoint presentation as one PDF file to Lars Gemmer (gemmer@wiso.uni-koeln.de) and use the subject line “BERD@NFDI Young Scientist Colloquium 2024”. All accepted submissions will be presented at the conference.

On the first day of the event, the participants will be introduced to the scope, functionality, and offerings of the BERD@NFDI platform. In addition, faculty, who are renowned experts in working with unstructured data and ML applications, will present recent best-practice approaches to data handling, pre-processing of unstructured data, and further analyzing that data.

On the second day, the event will mostly proceed in three parallel tracks based on the methodological angle of the participants’ work. Doctoral students and postdocs will discuss their work with their fellow students and experienced faculty, gathering detailed feedback on their empirical strategy and questions involving the use of unstructured data. The focus is explicitly on the methodology applied to the research questions. Other aspects of the research such as the attempted contribution, conceptualization, etc. are relevant to understanding the context and may be touched on, but are not the focus of this workshop. Doctoral students and postdocs in all stages of their academic careers are invited to apply for participation in the colloquium.

There is no conference fee. In addition, we are happy to inform you that we were able to secure extra funding that allows us to support young researchers with respect to their travel expenses. Conditional on your submission to the Young Researchers Colloquium, we will reimburse travel expenses up to the amount of EUR 500 for the first 15 submissions (expenses for transportation + hotel). Women in Data Science (WiDS) empowers women in the field of data science through inspiration, education, community and support. Originally established as a one-day technical conference at Stanford University in November 2015, WiDS has evolved into a global movement over the past seven years. It encompasses numerous initiatives worldwide and includes a conference in Munich this year.

The “WiDS Munich Conference” will take place on June 19, 2023, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Brienner Forum, Richard-Wagner-Str. 1, Munich. The event will kick off with speed dating, followed by lightning talks from data scientists in academia and industry, small group discussions, and will conclude with finger food.

The objective of the event is to inspire and connect data scientists, as well as individuals interested in data science, including those aspiring to become data scientists. The event extends a warm invitation to all interested individuals, regardless of gender, and aims to inspire and engage girls and women in this field through the participation of renowned women in data science.

Am 4. und 5. Mai 2020 fand der diesjährige KIM-Workshop (KIM steht für Kompetenzzentrum Interoperable Metadaten) statt. Aus gegebenem Anlass wurde der Workshop mit einem abgespeckten Programm virtuell abgehalten.

Mit BERD@BW waren wir in der Session “Daten aus Kultur und Wissenschaft in Wikibase” mit einem Vortrag unter dem Titel “BERD mit Wikibase: Instanzierung einer Wirtschaftsontologie im Wikiversum” mit dabei. In unserem Vortrag haben wir erläutert, warum und wie wir die Wikibase-Software für die Ontologieentwicklung und im Frontend einsetzen. Die Ontologie soll Firmen und deren Identifikatoren inklusive deren Quelle und Gültigkeit, sowie bestimmte Beziehungen zwischen den Firmen darstellen. Aufgrund der einfachen Handhabung mit Referenzen, Änderungsverlauf und mehrsprachigen Elementen fiel die Wahl auf Wikibase als geeignetes Werkzeug für unsere Anforderungen. Die Datenabfrage funktioniert u.a. über ein Frontend, welches wir mittels der Flask-Bibliothek in Python über die SPARQL-Schnittstelle von Wikibase implementiert haben. Erste Tests zeigen, dass Wikibase und Python, die über einen SPARQL-Endpunkt verbunden sind, für relativ kleine Datenbanken auch bei vielen Werten pro Eigenschaft eine gute Performance aufweisen. Es sind jedoch weitere Tests erforderlich, um die Performance der Datenbank und des Frontends umfassend zu klären.

In der Session gab es zwei weitere Vorträge zu Anwendungen der Wikibase. Sarah Hartmann und Hans-Jürgen Becker von der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek berichteten von ihrer Evaluation der Wikibase-Software für die GND-Daten. Alan Riedel und Johannes Sperling von der SLUB Dresden testen Wikibase dagegen als mögliches Tool, das Forschenden die Ontologie-Erstellung erleichtern könnte und Datenabfragen sowie -visualisierung ermöglicht.
Zum Abschluss des Workshops bildete sich eine Interessengruppe aus den KIM-Workshop-Teilnehmern, die zukünftig regelmäßig Erfahrungen in der Anwendung mit Wikibase austauschen wollen. Weitere Interessenten sind natürlich gerne willkommen.

Vom 17.03.-20.03.2020 fand die 82. Jahrestagung des Verbands der Hochschullehrer für Betriebswirtschaft (VHB) statt. Eigentlich sollte die Tagung in Frankfurt/Main “über die Bühne” gehen, aber infolge der Kontaktbeschränkungen zur Eindämmung des Coronavirus wurde sie als reine Online-Tagung durchgeführt. Für die Veranstalter war es sicherlich eine große Hau-Ruck-Aktion, diese “Digital Transformation” im Sinne des Tagungsmottos relativ kurzfristig zu stemmen. Die Vorträge wurden in Web-Konferenzen präsentiert, parallel konnte man sich über den Chat der Tagungs-App austauschen und verschiedene Web-Meetings fanden statt. Nach meinen eigenen Erfahrungen bei der Teilnahme an der Tagung haben Technik und Ablauf ziemlich gut funktioniert. Hut ab vor den Organisatoren und den Helfern!

Vom BERD@BW-Projekt war Dr. Georg Licht mit einem Vortrag über BERD in der Session “Forschungsinfrastrukturen in BWL und Finance” vertreten, um unseren Ansatz für unstrukturierte Daten (Bild, Video, Audio, Text) in den Wirtschaftswissenschaften vorzustellen. Ausgehend von der Tatsache, dass diese in der Forschung zunehmend wichtiger werden, soll mit BERD eine Infrastruktur entstehen, die (wirtschafts-)wissenschaftliche Daten aller Art und deren Auswertungsalgorithmen integriert. Auf diese Weise wird die Replizierbarkeit von Analyseergebnissen vereinfacht und neue Forschung durch eine erleichterte Nachnutzung der Daten und Algorithmen stimuliert. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf dem gesamten Forschungsprozess vom Preprocessing der Daten über die eigentliche Analyse bis hin zur Archivierung und ggf. Publikation, jeweils mit der Bereitstellung von entsprechender Rechen- und Speicherkapazität und unter Berücksichtigung der gängigen Standards bzgl. Datenaustausch und Metadaten. Als Initiative aus der Wissenschaft heraus, sind BERD das community involvement und die Nutzerzentriertheit ein besonderes Anliegen.

Weitere Vorträge, Workshops und Sessions bei der VHB Jahrestagung zum Machine Learning, Big Data, Textanalyse mittels Phython usw. bestätigen die Bedeutung von unstrukturierten Daten und entsprechenden Auswertungsmethoden für die betriebswirtschaftliche Forschung.
